Promotion refers to the act of being assigned a higher rank within a crew by either an autocratic decision by the crew's captain and/or senior officer who can assign immediate rank up to fleet officer without the captain's approval or by a vote, as per the other two political systems. The basis for promotions vary between crews and are usually listed in the crew's private statement. Some crews will pay you different amounts based upon your rank. Promotion also gives you certain privileges by increasing your rank. Crews can also demote you which is the opposite of promotion.
On doubloon oceans when you get promoted, to gain that rank's privilege you must have the badge. Example: You get promoted to pirate and you do not have a pirates badge, you can not gun until ordered to.
On nondoubloon oceans you have to be subscribed before gaining privileges.
Promotion can be accomplished by selecting the Crew tab, right clicking on the pirate in question, and selecting "assign rank".
